You can find the lithium battery marking and labeling guidelines inside Section 7 of the latest copy of the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) or the Lithium Battery Shipping Regulations (LBSR). What do the Lithium Battery Marks and Labels Look Like? The lithium battery mark is required as specified in the DGR.
Yes. The labels must be displayed on any side of the outer surface of a means of containment other than the side on which it is intended to rest or be stacked during transport. For a cylinder containing dangerous goods, the label must be displayed on or near the shoulder of the cylinder as shown below [Subsection 4.10 (3) (b)].
For the purposes of this definition “dangerous goods” means the substance or article as described by the proper shipping name shown in Table 4.2, e.g. for “Fire extinguishers”, the net quantity is the weight of the fire extinguisher.
However, the TDG regulations and many Transport Canada publications still refer to the former terminology of “dangerous goods safety marks.” Thus, we include both terms in our OSH Answer Fact Sheet. The current TDG Act legal terms and definitions are as follows: Safety mark - means a dangerous goods mark or a compliance mark.
All the provisions of the Dangerous Goods Regulations apply to shipments of Section IB batteries except the references listed in Section IB. Therefore, dangerous goods training as indicated in Subsection 1.5 of the Dangerous Goods Regulations is required.
One of the major risks associated with the transport of batteries and battery-powered equipment is short-circuit of the battery as a result of the battery terminals coming into contact with other batteries, metal objects, or conductive surfaces.
