A solar power tower, also known as 'central tower' power plant or ' heliostat ' power plant, is a type of solar furnace using a tower to receive focused sunlight. It uses an array of flat, movable mirrors (called heliostats) to focus the sun's rays upon a collector tower (the target).
Traditional solar power towers are constrained in size by the height of the tower and closer heliostats blocking the line of sight of outer heliostats to the receiver. The use of the pit mine's "stadium seating" helps overcome the blocking constraint.
In hybrid plants, the solar energy can be used to reduce fossil fuel usage or boost the power input to the steam turbine. Today, many areas of the developing world like India, Egypt and South Africa, are in need of new peaking and intermediate power sources and these locations are ideally suited for power tower development.
In summary, the power tower concentrating solar power plant, at the heart of which lies the heliostat, is a very promising area of renewable energy. Benefits include high optical concentration ratios and operating temperatures, corresponding to high efficiency, and an ability to easily incorporate thermal energy storage.
The primary benefit of solar towers is that they do not use fossil fuels for operation. The entire process of energy generation is reliant on sunlight. Therefore, it produces no emissions. Moreover, newer solar towers that use molten salts for energy storage can continue producing electricity even without sunlight.
Solar towers have the highest requirement of approximately 45 m 2/kW, in the case where no thermal storage is integrated. Many solar thermal power projects are currently in the pipeline (mainly in Spain) including plants using storage and ISCC plants (mainly in Morocco, Algeria and Spain).
