Panasonic Corporation today announced that Panasonic and GS Yuasa International Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding in which Panasonic agreed to transfer its Lead Acid Battery Business that is mainly operated by Panasonic Storage Battery Co., Ltd. , a wholly owned subsidiary of Panasonic, to GS Yuasa .
The Advanced Lead-acid Battery Consortium is a group of organizations that have focused on the development of the lead-carbon battery. They have conducted research in the carbon material and the negative pole for this technology.
In the Japanese automotive-type lead-acid battery market in which a large market expansion cannot be expected, the demands for high-value added products such as VRLA battery※1and ISS car battery※2for eco-friendly cars are rising.
Since its launch of the automotive battery "caos" in 2005, caos has broadened its exposure in Japan and maintained a leading position. Although the spread of start-stop system vehicles supports the steady growth in demand for lead acid batteries, competition is becoming increasingly severe due to the higher price of lead.

Past, present, and future of lead–acid batteries | Science
When Gaston Planté invented the lead–acid battery more than 160 years ago, he could not have foreseen it spurring a multibillion-dollar industry. Despite an apparently low energy density—30 to 40% of the theoretical limit versus 90% for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)—lead–acid batteries are made from abundant low-cost materials and nonflammable …
