Solar charge controllers are a crucial component in any off-grid or battery-based solar power system. They regulate the flow of electricity from the solar panels to the batteries, preventing overcharging and ensuring optimal system performance.
Monitoring the performance of the solar panel, it helps to ensure it is operating at its peak efficiency and reducing the risk of potential damage. A 100 Wp panel and a 12V 45 AH battery are used in the solar power plant battery charging process.
So, optimally, we should modify the charge-voltage by, typically, -16.2mV/°C. Also there can be a difference between the voltage measured at an MPPT solar charger’s terminals, and that measured at the battery terminals. For optimum charging that discrepancy needs to be taken into account, too.
Voltage (V) measures the electrical potential or pressure that drives the flow of electricity in a circuit. In the context of solar panels, voltage indicates the potential energy generated by the panels. Higher voltage means a greater potential to drive current through your electrical system.
The maximum voltage that a solar panel has is called open circuit voltage when the load is not connected. 8 to 12 Voc is for 36 solar panel cells in general. At maximum power of solar panels, the voltage is known as maximum power voltage. The general value of Vmp under load is 12 to 14 V. 12V 14V or 48 V are the standard voltages for solar panels.
Since solar panels produce different amounts of electricity depending on factors such as weather conditions, the charge controller ensures that excess power doesn't damage the batteries. Without a charge controller, a solar-powered system wouldn't be able to function optimally, and the batteries would quickly degrade.
