UAVs development gaps, useful guiding recommendations, and prospects. The interest in electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is rapidly growing in recent years. The reason is that UAVs have abilities to perform some difficult or dangerous tasks, with high mobility, safety, and low cost.
Consequently, these small-scale UAVs are usually devoted for commercial ends. Lithium batteries are preferred for small UAVs due to their low weight and relatively high specific energy. Indeed, LiPo batteries power almost 90% of micro aerial vehicles whith a weight less than 2 kg and a length less than 100 cm .
The most common batteries for drones are Li-Po and Li-Ion. Li-SOCl 2 – batteries have two times higher energy density per kg compared to the aforementioned and Li-air batteries can be up to seven times higher, however, they are unfortunately not so widely available and are much more expensive than Li-Po and Li-ion.
Electric power can be mainly provided by batteries, but their low energy density and long charging time prevent the UAV to have a sufficient flight-time . In addition, battery may not allow an UAV to conduct some maneuvers needing fast power response due to its slow power dynamics.
The toy drone batteries are only about a few dollars; FPV drone batteries are about tens of dollars; industrial drones are basically hundreds of dollars, and higher levels of drones such as big size of agricultural drone batteries can even be as high as thousands of dollars. 5.
