A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has set a new record in the power conversion efficiency of solar cells made using perovskite and organic materials. This technological breakthrough paves the way for flexible, light-weight, low cost and ultra-thin photovoltaic cells which are ideal for powering vehicles, boats...
The ultra-light, highly efficient solar cell was developed at NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) and is being commercialized by Emcore Corp. of Albuquerque, N.M. in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratories Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque.
This technological breakthrough paves the way for flexible, light-weight, low cost and ultra-thin photovoltaic cells which are ideal for powering vehicles, boats, blinds and other applications. “Technologies for clean and renewable energy are extremely important for carbon reduction.
Three-dimensional solar cells that can capture nearly all of the light that strikes them and could increase the efficiency of photovoltaic systems while reducing their size, weight and mechanical complexity are under development.
"Perovskites might be a game changer," said Michael McGehee, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and fellow with CU Boulder's Renewable & Sustainable Energy Institute. Scientists have been testing perovskite solar cells by stacking them on top of traditional silicon cells to make tandem cells.
By developing advanced solar cell structures, we are increasing their efficiency and reducing their cost. We are also investigating how machine learning can be used to improve different aspects of photovoltaics, including their operation within utility-scale power plants and their end-of-life (recycling).

Who Invented Solar Panels? History of Photovoltaic Cell
The Basic Principles of Photovoltaic Cells. Photovoltaic cells work through three main steps. First, they absorb light. This light creates electron-hole pairs, or excitons. Then, it''s time to separate these charges and take them to an external circuit. When light hits a PV cell, it excites the semiconductor, usually silicon. This excitement releases electrons. These …
