With an ARC test, you can understand the thermal behavior of cells, including the onset temperature and the rate of heat release during a thermal runaway. This information is crucial to develop safer battery technologies and implement safety measures to prevent or mitigate the risks associated with thermal runaway.
The ARC Device subsystem comprises the ARC Device Controller chart and the ARC Device Hardware subsystem. The hardware comprises a perfectly insulated box with a heater and a temperature sensor. The controller commands whether to apply heat or to enable cooldown.
The ARC Device subsystem slowly heats the cell with a heat-wait-seek strategy until the battery starts to self-heat. Then, the device waits until the reaction is complete and commands a cooldown procedure. In this section, you add an exothermic reactions fault to the Battery Cell block.
This example shows how to characterize the thermal runaway behavior of a battery cell by simulating an accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) test. An ARC test is a technique that studies and characterizes the thermal behavior of batteries. To measure the heat generation rate and thermal stability, the test subjects the battery to controlled heating.
The calibration relies on the execution of an automated procedure which is designed to account for differences in the response of the various thermocouples within the calorimeter at set temperatures. Typically the ARC® is calibrated to drift rate of ±0.01°C/min.
