A battery separator is a polymeric membrane placed between the positively charged anode and negatively charged cathode to prevent an electrical short circuit. The separator is a microporous layer that is moistened by the electrolyte, acting as a catalyst to increase the movement of ions from one electrode to the other.

The dry process is commonly employed for manufacturing ceramic-based battery separators. The first step in this process is to mix the ceramic powders with binders and additives.
The polyethylene separator (PE) shuts down the battery when the core temperature reaches 130°C, this process stops the transporting of ions between the electrodes. If the battery does not shut down at the rising temperature, heat in the failing cell could rise and lead to thermal runaway causing the battery to heat up and even catch fire.
