In 2012, Placke et al. first introduced the definition “dual-ion batteries” for the type of batteries and the name is used till today. To note, earlier DIBs typically applied graphite as both electrodes, liquid organic solvents and lithium salts as electrolytes.
To enhance the predictive ability, we used multiple indicators collected from the battery parameters during cycling and the incremental capacity (IC) curve. The contributions of health indicators in prediction were discussed.
In other words, the role of different health indicators needs to be accurately quantified. In this study, we used a classic deep neural network (DNN) algorithm to study the degradation laws in later battery service life under the common role of multiple health indicators.
“Dual-ion batteries represent an interesting high voltage alternative to the currently dominant lithium-ion batteries,” said Dr Alexey Glushenkov, Research Lead for the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program at ANU. “Due to their distinct operating principles these batteries may avoid the use of critical elements such as nickel and cobalt.”
The clear advantages of dual-ion batteries are thatnickel and cobalt are not used as the cathodes are typically made from carbon or organic materials and the negative ion intercalation may happen at very high potentials, considerably higher than potentials of state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery cathodes.
Compared to the conventional LIBs, the high working potential (>4.5 V) of DIBs promises the ways for enhancing energy density. In addition, free lithium in electrodes helps cut the overall cost to a much lower level which is especially precious in the condition of shorting natural resources.
