An ignition coil is the essential component of the battery ignition system which adjusts the voltage from low to high and generates sparks in the spark plug. An ignition coil is made up of a magnetic core or soft wire and two electrical windings known as the primary and secondary windings. The primary winding has 200 to 300 turns.
The ignition coil parts are all essential in the working of the ignition coil to convert and supply high voltage to the spark plug. The coil consists of three parts—the primary circuit, secondary circuit, and iron core. While the primary winding receives low voltage supplied by the battery, the high voltage is formed around the secondary winding.
Following figure shows a diagram of a conventional battery ignition system. Battery is the primary energy source for the system. One end of the battery is grounded to engine frame. The other end is connected to the primary terminal of the ignition coil through ballast and ignition switch.
The battery ignition system consists of battery, ignition switch, ballast resistor, ignition coil, contact breaker, capacitor, distributor and spark plug as its main component. Various component of the coil ignition system and their function is listed below. The electrical energy needed for the ignition is accumulated in a battery.
The primary coil has a few number coil and it is wound over the secondary coil. The entire coil is assembled to a compact unit. Low voltage (12 volts) current from the battery is stepped up to high voltage (10,000 volts) in the ignition coil by the principle of electromagnetic induction.
Here are the common ignition coil types used in automobiles. This type of ignition coil was common among older and vintage vehicles and now in recent cars but with a switch in design. While the former version of the can-type ignition coil used oil as a coolant and an insulator, newer versions utilize a dry insulation design.
