The cost of the battery needs to be reduced to less than $100 kWh −1 and the cost of the whole battery system (including the battery management system, BMS) reduced to less than $150 kWh −1. The total battery system cost will be $15,000 for a 100 kWh vehicle.
Now that the battery is within its normal operating temperature range, it can be rapidly charged and reach full capacity in just six minutes. Effectively, the cell can be used in any weather conditions and is equivalent to filling the tank of a gasoline-powered car, matching the company’s vision.
If 25 % of the capacity can be used for storage, the 120 million fleet will provide 3.75 TWh capacity, which represents a large fraction of the 5.5 TWh capacity needed. In addition, industry is ramping up battery manufacturing just for stationary and mobile storage applications.
Rechargeable batteries lose stored energy when they’re not being used because an idle battery undergoes internal chemical reactions that slowly drain its energy. This “self-discharge” process can eventually consume active ingredients in the cathode, where the electron-spent lithium ions collect while the device is in use.
Not charging the battery to its full capacity could improve its lifetime. The study’s other senior author is Oleg Borodin, staff scientist at DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory and co-principal investigator at the Stanford/SLAC-led Aqueous Battery Consortium.
For battery degradation, an arbitrary depreciation (20 % capacity degradation) value is assigned to the storage use (20 % of the battery cost) for 10 years, or $3000. Another significant cost is the bi-directional charger, which is expensive today (up to $5000 for an average household).

Better to keep laptop plugged in at 60% or plug/unplug at 100%?
You can keep it at 60% always if you don''t need the "extra" battery life. In gaming the AC adaptor delivers what''s needed, not the battery. The battery is bypassed if already charged to that percentage so there''s no difference in performance with any limit. The difference here is made by the AC charger that should be plugged in.

Should laptops remain plugged in when their battery is 100% charged?
This page has a good answer: "it depends". The answer is: YES and NO, it depends on the situation. Having a battery fully charged and the laptop plugged in is not harmful, because as soon as the charge level reaches 100% the battery stops receiving charging energy and this energy is bypassed directly to the power supply system of the laptop.
