The trickle charge current is internally set to 17.5%(Typical) of the full-scale current. When the battery voltage exceeds 66.5% of regulation voltage, the charger goes into the full-scale constant current charge mode.
Solar charge controllers put batteries through 4 charging stages: What are the 4 Solar Battery Charging Stages? For lead-acid batteries, the initial bulk charging stage delivers the maximum allowable current into the solar battery to bring it up to a state of charge of approximately 80 to 90%.
In constant current mode, the charge current is set by the external sense resistor RCS and an internal 120mV reference, the charge current equals to 120mV/RCS. When the battery voltage approaches the regulation voltage, the charger goes into constant voltage mode, and the charge current will start to decrease.
At the beginning of the charge cycle, if the battery voltage is less than 66.5% of regulation voltage (VREG), the charger goes into trickle charge mode. The trickle charge current is internally set to 17.5%(Typical) of the full-scale current.
In Bulk, the charger tries to put as much charge current into the battery as possible. The charge current is usually limited by the charger capacity, which would include solar variability in the case of solar charging.
The main architecture adopts two-loop current-mode control in the constant current (CC) and the constant voltage (CV) stages. Compare to the voltage-mode control, the proposed architecture reduces the complexity significantly. Trickle-current mode provides complete battery charging process to protect the battery.
What are the Solar Battery Charging Stages?
Float charging, sometimes referred to as "trickle" charging occurs after Absorption Charging when the battery has about 98% state of charge. Then, the charging current is reduced further so the battery voltage drops down to the Float …

Multi-Stage Charging
After completion of the Absorb stage a multi stage charger will change to Float charging. This is also constant voltage charging but the voltage is lower than the Absorb voltage. Float is some times called ''trickle charging''. Charge current is very low. Float charging brings the battery up the last few % to 100%.
