The lead-acid battery smelter, visible in the background of this photo, lead to a mass poisoning in Owino Uhuru, a village in Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city. Pop the hood of nearly any car and you’ll find a battery the size of a breadbox.
Ingestion of vegetables and inhalation are the main exposure pathways. In recent years, environmental pollution and public health incidents caused by the recycling of spent lead-acid batteries (LABs) has becoming more frequent, posing potential risk to both the ecological environment and human health.
Lead-acid batteries (LABs), one of the earliest secondary batteries in industrial production, are widely used in the automotive industry, satisfying the increasing energy demands of conventional vehicle start-stop systems and mild hybrid power systems ( EUROBAT and ACEA, 2014 ).
In 2017, California began what is expected to be a long process of removing lead pollution in residential areas near Los Angeles, spewed over 33 years by the recently-shuttered battery-recycling plant (owned and operated since 2000 by Exide Technologies) two miles away.
Over ten major lead poisoning accidents have occurred in Shaanxi, Hunan, Fujian, Henan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Yunnan, Anhui, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and other regions, affecting nearly 4000 children (Ji et al., 2011; Tian et al., 2014). As a result, China faces a severe situation in controlling pollution from recycling process of spent LABs.
Smelting lead from spent car batteries is done over open-fire furnaces around the world. This image, from 2008, was taken in Dakar, Senegal. Gottesfeld has researched lead poisoning for 30 years.

Lead-Acid Versus Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
A number of recent incidents involving lithium-ion battery fires, have made us aware that batteries contain chemicals. And that some of these can harm the environment, not to mention us and the kids too. NiCad batteries contain nickel-oxide-hydroxide in their cathodes, and use metallic cadmium anodes. Their electrolyte is a water-based, alkaline solution. Nickel …
