These early capacitors used a wax-impregnated dielectric paper and metal foils and were employed in early radio applications. The technology was improved 24 years later when Mansbridge developed a metallized paper film capacitor.
This paper presents a comprehensive review of metallized film capacitors used for EMI filtering and their failure modes and mechanisms. One of the major failure mechanisms discussed is the corrosion of the metallized film due to moisture ingress into the package.

The self-healing ability of metallized film capacitors gives stability to their electrical characteristics over long periods of time, making them attractive candidates for industrial applications such as filters in power converters.
Capacitors are passive electrical components that store charge on electrodes that are separated by a dielectric material. In the case of film capacitors, these electrodes are thin layers of metal that are insulated by sheets of polymer or paper and co-wound into a tight roll, although vertically stacked configurations are also available.
