In the context of robotic warehouses, battery management concerns three main decisions: the decision of battery charging technology, the decision of battery charging policy, and the battery charging facility configuration. The first decision concerns the choice of battery charging technology applied in a robotic warehouse.
Battery charging disturbs robotic operations and increases the order throughput time, even if fast charging is adopted. Therefore, it is necessary to consider battery management in the evaluation and analysis of automated warehouses. This paper investigates battery management in a newly-developed self-climbing robotic (SCR) system.
In-house battery maintenance is not practical for everyone and large organizations hire outside firms to provide this service. The incoming battery specialist will first validate all batteries by a full analysis and replace packs that do not meet the capacity threshold. Good batteries are identified with a service label and returned.
With this purpose, an optimization model is proposed in order to identify an optimal control strategy for the battery charging of a fleet of electric mobile MHE (e.g., forklifts), allowing minimizing the economic and environmental impact of material handling activities in labor-intensive warehouses.
In warehouses, energy is required for two different macro-categories of activities: the first concerns the energy consumption due to direct movements of product or materials by both fixed material handling equipment (MHE), such as conveyor systems and automated cranes, and mobile MHE, such as forklift, trucks, etc.
This management scheme is known as “battery management system (BMS)”, which is one of the essential units in electrical equipment. BMS reacts with external events, as well with as an internal event. It is used to improve the battery performance with proper safety measures within a system.
