The Operation and Maintenance Plan for Off-Grid Solar Systems covers preventive maintenance, best use practices, and common malfunctions and defects experienced for the O&M of pico-solar PV systems, solar home systems (SHS) (including component-based SHS) and solar water pumps. The O&M Plan covers the following topics:
1 Introduction This guide considers Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of photovoltaic (PV) systems with the goal of reducing the cost of O&M and increasing its effectiveness. Reported O&M costs vary widely, and a more standardized approach to planning and delivering O&M can make costs more predictable.
In literature, three general maintenance strategies for solar PV systems are mentioned: corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance. Fig. 8 shows the evolution of maintenance strategies over time, along with examples of maintenance activities for PV systems. Fig. 8. Evolution of maintenance strategies.
Preventative maintenance for solar assets is a proactive strategy that reduces the chance of failure resulting in unplanned downtime. A preventative strategy can include scheduled cleanings, component replacements, and system repairs. Overall, it should increase the operational performance of the equipment.
Preventive Maintenance 1 Visual inspection of Solar Facility’s general site conditions, PV arrays, electrical equipment, mounting structure, fence, shading, trackers, vegetation, animal damage, erosion, corrosion, and discolored panels.
Therefore, maintenance management is essential for reliable and effective operation of PV power plants, ensuring uninterrupted system operation and minimizing downtime. Compared to well-established technologies such as hydro, thermal, and wind, the O&M processes for PV systems are not yet fully structured in many operating companies .
