The goal of this work is to estimate the SOC of a domestic-grade lead–acid battery through empirical measurements of battery voltage and current using the Ampere-hour integral estimation method with constant and variable C-rates for discharge current.
For applications using batteries, the situation is often critical if users are suddenly without energy (for example electric bicycles, security cameras, alarms, IoT, on-board sensors…). In these cases, the accuracy of a Coulomb Counter for batteries State of Charge measurement is a “must have”.
The Coulomb counting approach computes the present SOC as follows: where is the instantaneous current through the battery and is the battery capacity in ampere hours, that is, the present SOC is the summation of the initial SOC and the change in SOC, computed through the above integration.
Simply measuring a voltage at the terminals of a battery is not enough to know its precise state of charge (SoC). With our CC75/150/500, the advantage is real and allows precise counting of coulombs to determine their state of charge, as well as a measurement of the battery voltage and the instantaneous current used.
It can be seen that lead-acid batteries have a relatively linear curve, which allows a good estimation of the state of charge : for a measured voltage, it is possible to estimate fairly precisely the value of the associated SoC.
