In the last decade, the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry in China has developed rapidly, with the joint promotion of the market and policies. China’s PV modules’ production is ranked top in the world, making a significant impact on the world’s renewable energy development and solar PV industrial sector.
Based on the history, we found that China’s domestic market lagged to China’s solar manufacturing industry. The industry grew quickly in the international solar energy market, especially after the Germany EGG in 2004.
Reliable data showed that during the period, China's output of polysilicon, silicon wafers, solar cells, and modules all grew by over 30 percent year on year, and exports of PV modules rose by nearly 20 percent from the same period last year.
After the “Concession Bidding” and the “Golden-Sun Pilot Project” in 2009, China’s domestic solar market started to grow. By the end of 2012, the gross installed capacity of the solar PV industry was about 6.5 GW, wherein the distributed power generation installed capacity was over 3.5 GW .
The manufacturing of PV module in China has increased about 1000 times, from 3 MW in 2000 to 23 GW in 2012. In 2011, the shipment of global solar cells was about 37.675 GWp, wherein the shipment of the Chinese Mainland was 21.157 GWp, occupying 56.16% of the global market .
Another distinctive feature of China’s solar PV companies is that they make good use of the international financial markets. With limited government equity participation, the only way to finance a large company of the class of national champions is to seek capital from the open markets, notably the world’s financial centers.
