Introduction to Batteries Course Description:There is a great deal of interest in batteries today, particularly in lithium-ion batteries. This tutorial is one of five in a series developed by Robert Spotnitz, President of Battery Design, LLC.
Early batteries were commercialized with such anodes [25–31]. However, they faced safety concerns due to the formation of anode dendrites. The insertion of lithium in graphite dates from 1955, but this was only confirmed by the synthesis of LiC6 in 1965 .
The present review has outlined the historical background relating to lithium, the inception of early Li-ion batteries in the early 20th century and the subsequent commercialisation of Li-ion batteries in the 1990s. The operational principle of a typical rechargeable Li-ion battery and its reaction mechanisms with lithium was discussed.
The 16 modules forming the battery pack contain 7104 Li-ion (18–650) batteries. 539 From the recycling perspective, the battery pack equates to 47.2 kg of Ni (US$ 623), 7.1 kg of Li (US$ 71), 9 kg of Co (US$ 320), and 1.3 kg of Al (US$ 2.30). This equates to a material value of US$ 943 per vehicle battery pack for recycling the Co and Ni alone.
Typical examples include lithium–copper oxide (Li-CuO), lithium-sulfur dioxide (Li-SO 2), lithium–manganese oxide (Li-MnO 2) and lithium poly-carbon mono-fluoride (Li-CF x) batteries. 63 - 65 And since their inception these primary batteries have occupied the major part of the commercial battery market.
However, the later part of the 20th century saw the invention and rapid development of a wide range of portable electrical devices like electronic calculators, laptop computers, mobile phones, and power tools. These devices have proliferated the world and revolutionized business, science, and society as a whole.
