Sodium-sulfur batteries Sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries are famous for the high-temperature Na-S (HT Na-S) batteries because of it being widely used in large-scale stationary energy systems .
Unlike lithium–sulfur and solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries, sodium–sulfur and its solid-state counterparts are much less developed. In particular, it has been challenging to operate room-temperature sodium–sulfur batteries.
Sodium batteries have shown great potential, and hence several researchers are working on improving the battery performance of the various sodium batteries. This paper is a brief review of the current research in sodium-sulfur and sodium-air batteries. 1. Introduction
Now, a strategy based on solid-state sodium–sulfur batteries emerges, making it potentially possible to eliminate scarce materials such as lithium and transition metals. Solid-state batteries (SSBs) — where the liquid electrolyte is replaced with a solid ionic conductor — are at the forefront of developing post-lithium-ion batteries 1.
Although sulfur cathode-based batteries possess high theoretical capacity, there are some technical challenges for Na-S batteries coming from the materials chemistry and the system of the battery [12, 13]. The common problems are the same as of Li-S batteries.
The new sodium-sulfur batteries are also environmentally friendly, driving the clean energy mission forward at a low cost. To realize the universal goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, the world is keenly looking at advancements in battery technology.
