The development of new battery technologies starts with the lab scale where material compositions and properties are investigated. In pilot lines, batteries are usually produced semi-automatically, and studies of design and process parameters are carried out. The findings from this are the basis for industrial series production.
Developments in different battery chemistries and cell formats play a vital role in the final performance of the batteries found in the market. However, battery manufacturing process steps and their product quality are also important parameters affecting the final products’ operational lifetime and durability.
Since battery production is a cost-intensive (material and energy costs) process, these standards will help to save time and money. Battery manufacturing consists of many process steps and the development takes several years, beginning with the concept phase and the technical feasibility, through the sampling phases until SOP.
Figure 1 introduces the current state-of-the-art battery manufacturing process, which includes three major parts: electrode preparation, cell assembly, and battery electrochemistry activation. First, the active material (AM), conductive additive, and binder are mixed to form a uniform slurry with the solvent.
