In Austria, hydropower is one of the most widely used means of generating electricity. Run-of-river power stations produce power around the clock, while pumped storage power stations store the energy and supply electricity to consumers as required.
As the largest energy company in Austria and a leading operator of hydropower plants in Bavaria, we are well aware of our responsibility. We supply millions of people safely with the energy essential for life – hydropower being our strongest pillar.
The VERBUND power plant Wien-Freudenau is Europe’s largest city power plant and links Vienna to Danube Island. The Danube power plant Freudenau was put into operation in 1998. It was the first Danube power plant to have been planned with a fish pass from the outset.
Private households and small generating stations, like home photovoltaic systems, make up the bottom level. For many years, people in Austria were supplied by local generating companies, and there was no such thing as a free choice of provider, which consumers now take for granted.
More than 30 countries form the integrated system, and Austria is one of them. High-voltage lines transmit electricity over large distances, and national transmission system operators (TSOs) work around the clock to ensure that the system remains in equilibrium. Plans are in place to make the European electricity network smarter in the future.
At the moment, wind power accounts for about 11% of Austria’s total electricity output. The share of photovoltaics in Austria is growing rapidly and already accounts for 7 percent of total electricity generation. Stable grid thanks to thermal and pumped storage power stations
