The Series and Shunt Capacitor compensation techniques are used to modify the natural electrical characteristics of the electric power system. Providing reactive shunt compensation with shunt-connected capacitors and reactors in optimal location is a well-established technique to get a better voltage profile in a power system.
This paper presents a case study at an industrial site on improving the power factor by integrating a capacitor bank, and detailed implementation of the technical and economic benefit of power factor improvement is provided. A simulation interface is used to model the electrical network of the site with the loads.
Since the main goal of placing compensating capacitors along the distribution feeders is to reduce the total network losses and bring the buses voltages within the allowable limits while minimising the total cost, in this paper, the objective function is defined by (1).
In the second experiment, it is seen that the results found by CSA are more accurate than the results reported in the current literature. On the optimal capacitor placement, the convergence rate of CSA is good and it is seen that CSA solves the problem in less computational time than the other investigated methods.
Theoretically and economically, corrective measures, including installing shunt capacitor banks and using onsite synchronous machines to supply reactive power locally, were examined - . The size of the capacitor bank is determined by the type of electrical load in the plant .
CONCLUSION A capacitor is said to be the generator of the reactive power. When a capacitor is connected across the load bus, it reduces the reactive power demand from the line and boosts the voltage profile of the system.
