In most states, except for North-eastern States, Hill States/Union Territories (UTs), and Island UTs, the government will provide a subsidy of 30%. Both the Central and State Governments will contribute to this subsidy, and the farmer will invest the remaining 40% for installing a solar pump.
Under the Scheme, central government subsidy upto 30% or 50% of the total cost is given for the installation of standalone solar pumps and also for the solarization of existing grid-connected agricultural pumps.
The subsidy amount will get credited directly to the bank accounts of the farmers. The farmers can utilize their wastelands for installing solar pumps. The RBI treats this scheme under priority sector and hence banks will provide 30% of the amount as loans to beneficiaries. Who will be eligible for the scheme?
Beneficiary farmers should pay only 10% of the total cost of the pump. However, 90% of the subsidy will be paid by the Government. For the SC/ST category, self contribution limits to5 per cent only. The subsidy amount will get credited directly to the bank accounts of the farmers. The farmers can utilize their wastelands for installing solar pumps.
For North-eastern States, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir / Ladakh, and Island UTs, the government will provide a higher subsidy of 50% from the Central Government, and the State Government will contribute at least 30%. The farmer must invest the remaining 20% for installing the solar pump.
The main constraint in this sector is farmers’ dependency on pumps for irrigation. Most of the farmers use pumps some of which are connected to the grid while some of the pumps run on diesel and other fossil fuels. Solar energy is one of the most vital renewable sources of energy that can be utilized for different purposes.
