The physical arrangement of batteries can be designed to match a wide variety of configurations, whereas a flywheel at a minimum must occupy a certain area and volume, because the energy it stores is proportional to its rotational inertia and to the square of its rotational speed.
The basic function of the flywheel is to convert the mechanical energy for the end-use application, which is electrical energy. For this conversion, an electromechanical machine is required which could be a motor/generator set. Generator and motor: When the kinetic energy is being stored, the motor is used to drive the flywheel.
Flywheel energy storage (FES) is a very interesting technology. Fig. 9.3 shows the working principle of FES. During the off-peak hours or when the electricity production is larger than the energy demand, surplus energy is used to drive the motor connected to the flywheel. This flywheel converts the electrical energy into rotational kinetic energy.
It is hoped that flywheel systems can replace conventional chemical batteries for mobile applications, such as for electric vehicles. Proposed flywheel systems would eliminate many of the disadvantages of existing battery power systems, such as low capacity, long charge times, heavy weight and short usable lifetimes.
Charging energy is input to the rotating mass of a flywheel and stored as kinetic energy. This stored energy can be released as electric energy on demand. The rotating mass is supported by magnetic bearings which operate in a vacuum to eliminate frictional losses during long-term storage and safety issues .
Think of it as a mechanical storage tool that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage. This energy is stored in the form of rotational kinetic energy. Typically, the energy input to a Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) comes from an electrical source like the grid or any other electrical source.
