Increasing the percent of compensation and/or the load demand of reactive power results in better improvement of the voltage level by the series capacitor. To the authors’ knowledge, the present paper is the first to successfully reduce the voltage sag to its acceptable levels during the motor's starting period using series capacitor.
To the authors’ knowledge, the present-paper is the first to successfully reduce the voltage-sag to its acceptable levels during the motor's starting period using series-capacitor. On the other hand, shunt-capacitors show no significant improvement of the voltage during the starting-period of the motor.
Voltage sag is a decrease of the voltage to lie in the range 0.1-0.9 pu at power frequency from 0.5 cycle to 1 minute , , , , , . Starting of induction motors on weak distribution networks is one of the primary sources of voltage sags. Voltage sags have severe impacts on the operation of many loads.
The use of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) in mitigating the voltage sag in a real distribution network in Egypt (Karot line) due to simultaneous starting of 16 water-pumping motors was studied . A comparison between the obtained results in and those in the present work can give a credit to both methods.
The voltage at the far end bus of the radial line is 85% in the base case scenario against 90% for the full series-capacitor. This indicates that series compensation successfully eliminates the voltage sag problem in the line while connecting shunt capacitors to the motors have negligible effect on the voltage.
On connecting the series capacitor, the voltage reaches 99.85%, 99.66% and 99.49% for the three load cases, respectively. This represents a respective increase in the voltage by 2.23%, 4.42% and 7.2% in conformity to the adaptive nature of series compensation being increased with the load increase.

What does the Voltage Rating on a Capacitor Mean?
The voltage rating on a capacitor is the maximum amount of voltage that a capacitor can safely be exposed to and can store. Remember that capacitors are storage devices. The main thing you need to know about capacitors is that they store X charge at X voltage; meaning, they hold a certain size charge (1µF, 100µF, 1000µF, etc.) at a certain voltage (10V, 25V, 50V, etc.). So …

Voltage Sag: Causes, Effects, And Mitigation Techniques
The difference between sag and dip is that sag refers to a more significant reduction, typically between 10-90% of the nominal voltage level. In contrast, a dip is a small reduction in voltage, normally less than 10% of the minor level. The duration of a voltage sag can vary depending on the cause, but it usually lasts for a few cycles or seconds.
