Capacitive displacement sensors measure the amount of distance travelled by the target object using capacitance. Capacitive keyboards are keyboards that uses capacitance for key detection and is better than a traditional keyboard. Rain sensing capacitive sensors are devices that are used in automatic wiper systems in automobile.
Sensors that use capacitance for measurement are known as capacitive sensors. A capacitive sensor is similar to a capacitor. A capacitor is used to store energy in the form of charges and this principle is modified a bit for the working of capacitive sensors. The construction and working principle of a generalized capacitive sensor are as follows:
Capacitive displacement sensors are sophisticated instruments that measure changes in an electrical field to assess physical quantities such as distance, position, or proximity. They work based on the fundamental principle of capacitor, which is a device capable of storing electrical energy within an electric field.
At the heart of this development are the sensing methods themselves, the process by which capacitance is measured and converted into digital values that can be processed, manipulated and interpreted. Charge Transfer, Successive Approximation, Sigma-Delta, and Mutual Capacitance Measurement are the most commonly used sensing methods.
Most capacitance sensors are cylindrical and can be secured using epoxy, set screws or “Vee” blocks. Each method is acceptable, however, care must be taken to ensure the capacitive probe is perpendicular to the target and not able to move.
However, while there are a vast number of ways in which engineers can design with capacitive sensing to create innovative interfaces, engineers must also understand the many ways the underlying technology can be manipulated to maximize sensitivity, accuracy, and responsiveness of the sensors.

A capacitive displacement sensor can be generally described as two parallel conducting plates with large area. If the fringe effect at the edges of the plates is ignored as the ideal case of two infinite plates, the capacitance C of the plates with area A can be represented by the following equation [16]: (1) C = ε A d where d and ɛ are the size of and the permittivity of …
