The starting system is a combination of mechanical and electrical compo-nents that work together to start the engine. The starting system is designed to change electrical energy that is being stored in the battery into mechanical energy. To accomplish this conver-sion, a starter motor is used.
The starting system includes the battery, starter motor, solenoid, ignition switch, and neutral safety switch. The battery stores electrical energy to power the starter motor, a small electric motor that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy to spin the crankshaft. The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when activated.
When the starter operates, the current passing through the armature produces a magnetic field in each of its conductors. The reaction between the magnetic field of the armature and the magnetic fields produced by the field coils causes the arma-ture to rotate.
When an inertia starter spins, the pinion moves along the thread of the motor shaft and engages with the flywheel gear ring. It then reaches a stop at the end of the thread, begins to turn with the shaft and so turns the engine. Once the engine starts, it spins the pinion faster than its own starter-motor shaft.

The switch can be either of the following: In addition to closing the contact points, solenoid-equipped circuits often use the movement of the sole-noid to engage the starter motor with the engine flywheel.
Upon activating the ignition, the starter relay powers the solenoid, directing current to the motor. The solenoid engages a lever, meshing the pinion gear with the flywheel or flexplate, initiating engine turnover. After releasing the ignition, the relay cuts power, and the solenoid disengages, retracting the pinion.
