In the Special Project Implementation Plan for Promoting Strategic Emerging Industries “New Energy Vehicles” (2012–2015), power batteries and their management system are key implementation areas for breakthroughs. However, since 2016, the Chinese government hasn’t published similar policy support.
As the largest developing country, China has been adhering to the spirit of “pursuit of excellence” and has invested a lot of manpower and material resources in science and technology innovation, and the NEV battery industry is just one of the projects. The Chinese government has introduced support policies to develop this industry successively.
Thermal runaway of Li-ion power batteries is the main cause of fire accidents in EVs. It has the characteristics of high hazardness, complicated triggering reasons, and great concealment before the accident. Therefore, researching the safe applications of power battery systems is important for improving the safety of EVs.
The EV power battery system consists of hundreds or thousands of cells. As one of the core technologies of NEVs, power battery accounts for over 30% of the cost of NEVs, directly determines the development level and direction of NEVs. In 2020, the installed capacity of NEV batteries in China reached 63.3 GWh, and the market size reached 61.184 billion RMB, gaining support from many governments.
As a crucial component of EVs, power batteries have become a core part of research and development in the growing market of NEVs. Current, weight, performance, storage capacity, and a lifetime of power batteries are key areas of research that are essential for the continued success of the NEVs market.
