Abstract: This paper presents the updated status of energy storage (ES) technologies, and their technical and economical characteristics, so that, the best technology can be selected either for grid-connected or off-grid power system applications.
However, the control and energy management strategy between the renewable energy sources and the energy storages under different operating modes is a challenging task. In this paper, a new energy management scheme is proposed for the grid connected hybrid energy storage with the battery and the supercapacitor under different operating modes.
In conclusion, energy storage systems play a crucial role in modern power grids, both with and without renewable energy integration, by addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, improving grid stability, and enabling efficient energy management.
In off-grid applications, ES can be used to balance the generation and consumption, to prevent frequency and voltage deviations. Due to the widespread use of battery energy storage (BES), the paper further presents various battery models, for power system economic analysis, reliability evaluation, and dynamic studies.
This article discussed the key features and potential applications of different electrical energy storage systems (ESSs), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and thermal energy storage (TES) systems. It highlighted the advantages of electrical ESSs, such as positive environmental impact, long life expectancy and flexible operation.
Furthermore, grid-scale storage solutions such as pumped hydro storage and compressed air energy storage (CAES) can boost grid stability and reliability by storing renewable energy for longer periods.
