In the event that the battery packs do not meet the performance and safety requirements to be directly reused, they can be disassembled, undergo direct regeneration to repair the electrode materials and other components before returning to battery fabrication and assembling process (route 2).
When an EV battery pack dies prematurely, functioning modules and cells can often be recombined to create refurbished battery packs for other vehicles. In some cases, batteries could be refurbished for use directly in another vehicle, potentially extending the useful life of many vehicle systems.
For a spent battery pack, there are three options: disposal should only be done if the battery has been systematically assessed to be damaged or unfit for reuse or recycling. The second life option is also available, as there is still considerable storage capacity (70-80%) left in a battery at the end of its first life.
According to EU regulations, a minimum recycling rate of 50% of the total weight of the battery is required. Canadian company Li-cycle claims to have developed a technology that can recover between 80% to 100% of the resources from lithium-ion batteries. Fortum's recycling system can recover 80% of the materials from all-spent batteries.
Based on improvements in dilution alone, the EV battery pack’s nickel and copper appear to merit recycling the most compared to their natural resource counterparts; however, cobalt is the clear metal value driver of LiB recycling with the most favorable combination of market price and dilution of any target metal.
In the absence of a thermal pre-treatment process time in literature, a patent review of thermal battery recycling processes indicates furnace residence times as short as 26 min for cobalt-containing lithium-ion batteries ( 阿部大造 冨岡功, 1993) and 30 min for zinc, cadmium, lead and alkaline batteries ( Hanulik, 1995 ).

Trends in Lithium-ion Battery Reuse and Recycling
Once the battery performance degrades below its first life use, it is replaced by a new battery pack. For the spent battery pack, there exist three options – Disposal, Repurposing, Recycling. Ideally, disposal should only be done in case a battery has been systematically assessed to be damaged or unfit for reuse or recycling.

Battery packs can be attractive sources of lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper. Copper and nickel concentrations are often 1x magnitude higher than economic ores. Thermal recycling requires lower variable costs than mechanical recycling. Mechanical requires more time than thermal, but thermal uses more energy.

Although there is no unified regulation on the required battery life of electric vehicles yet, it is widely agreed that the average lifespan of electric vehicle batteries currently in use and on sale is approximately 15 years. Still, some people question that the life of the lithium battery may not exceed ten years while others argue that, if the battery is used reasonably, it …

What Happens to Old EV Batteries?
Manufacturers guarantee them for at least 8 years or 100,000 miles, but it seems likely that the batteries built for electric vehicles today might work as long as 15 or 20 years. In fact, the battery packs themselves will last far longer than the rest of the EV, even if they no longer supply enough power to make the car run.
