A new concept design brings the idea closer to reality. Lithium-ion batteries are growing outdated, both for environmental reasons and their tendency to catch on fire. In working toward a replacement, researchers have made a new concept for an aluminum-ion battery.
The idea of making batteries with aluminum isn’t new. Researchers investigated its potential in the 1970s, but it didn’t work well. When used in a conventional lithium-ion battery, aluminum fractures and fails within a few charge-discharge cycles, due to expansion and contraction as lithium travels in and out of the material.
There's a long way to go before aluminum-ion batteries become commercially available, but the design solves major problems of energy storage. From smartphones to electric cars, there's a lot riding on future battery developments. While lithium-ion batteries have become standard, their future growth is seen as unstable for a number of reasons.
Aluminium batteries aren't new, but in this case researchers swapped out the graphite usually used as the cathode, replacing it with the carbon-based molecule anthraquinone (the cathode absorbs electrons as the battery is used).
When used in a conventional lithium-ion battery, aluminum fractures and fails within a few charge-discharge cycles, due to expansion and contraction as lithium travels in and out of the material. Developers concluded that aluminum wasn’t a viable battery material, and the idea was largely abandoned.
Since aluminum is easily recycled, the company plans to rely largely on recycled materials in the manufacturing process of their batteries. Aluminum is the third most-abundant material in the Earth’s crust, and it recycles very cleanly, creating a captive supply chain.
