Learn more: Wind Energy According to a report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Table 30), depending on make and model wind turbines are predominantly made of steel (66-79% of total turbine mass); fiberglass, resin or plastic (11-16%); iron or cast iron (5-17%); copper (1%); and aluminum (0-2%).
Requirements toward the wind turbine materials, loads, as well as available materials are reviewed. Apart from the traditional composites for wind turbine blades (glass fibers/epoxy matrix composites), natural composites, hybrid and nanoengineered composites are discussed.
NREL researchers also released the report Large Castings for Wind Turbines, using the REMPD to quantify how many more hubs and bedplates—two large cast iron components used in wind turbines—the country would need to meet its clean energy goals. Today, the United States imports and installs about 5,000 of each of these components a year.
Many turbine components are domestically sourced and manufactured in the United States. According to the Land-Based Wind Market Report by the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, wind turbine towers are 60-75% domestically sourced, blade and hub components are 30-50% domestic, and nacelle assemblies are over 85% domestically sourced.
Lamination Historically, wind turbine blades (made of thermoset resin and fiberglass as well as other composite materials) were manufactured using the hand-lay-up process. The disadvantage of manual lamination is the difficulty of properly controlling the amount of resin in the laminate.
This results in enormous static, dynamic, and cyclical loading from factors such as the self-weight of the turbine, wind shear, and the rotation of the blades. To withstand buckling from such loads, towers are commonly made of tubular steel manufactured in sections and tapered towards the top.
