A typical battery is composed of one or more cells that have a cathode (positive terminal) on one end and an anode (negative terminal) on the other end. Chemical reactions contained within cause a buildup of electrical charge at the terminals, producing an electric potential across the nodes via the release of chemical energy.
The function of a battery is determined by its chemistry. The most common type of battery chemistry is lead-acid, which is used in car batteries. Lead-acid batteries convert electrical energy in chemical form and then release it as electrical current when needed.
Battery life can be extended by storing the batteries at a low temperature, as in a refrigerator or freezer, which slows the side reactions. Such storage can extend the life of alkaline batteries by about 5%; rechargeable batteries can hold their charge much longer, depending upon type.
All batteries have three basic parts: an anode (the negative end), a cathode (the positive end), and an electrolyte (a substance that helps conduct electricity). When you connect a battery to an electrical circuit, electrons flow from the negative anode to the positive cathode through the electrolyte. This flow of electrons produces electricity.
The terminal marked negative is the source of electrons. When a battery is connected to an external electric load, those negatively charged electrons flow through the circuit and reach to the positive terminal, thus cause a redox reaction by attracting positively charged ions, cations.
The most common type of battery used in electronic devices is the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Li-ion batteries are lightweight and have a high energy density, meaning they can store a lot of energy in a small space. They also have a long lifespan and can be recharged many times before needing to be replaced.
8.3: Electrochemistry
This reaction regenerates the lead, lead (IV) oxide, and sulfuric acid needed for the battery to function properly. Theoretically, a lead storage battery should last forever. In practice, the recharging is not (100%) efficient because some of the lead (II) sulfate falls from the electrodes and collects on the bottom of the cells.
