But terminated boost charging or equalizing charging are occasionally included in monitoring routines for valve-regulated lead-acid batteries in order to recoup the full capacity of the negative electrodes . The effect of such boost charges is, of course, only temporary.
The lead-acid battery is an unstable system, since the decomposition voltage of the water in its electrolyte amounts to only 1.23 V which is far below the nominal cell voltage of 2 V.
The process is the same for all types of lead-acid batteries: flooded, gel and AGM. The actions that take place during discharge are the reverse of those that occur during charge. The discharged material on both plates is lead sulfate (PbSO4). When a charging voltage is applied, charge flow occurs.
Our VRLA batteries are designed to be “acid-starved.” This means that the power (sulfate) in the acid is used before the power in the plates. This design protects the plates from ultra-deep discharges. Ultra-deep discharging is what causes life-shortening plate shedding and accelerated positive grid corrosion which can destroy a battery.
The valve-regulated design of lead-acid batteries offers a number of advantages compared to its flooded counterpart. There are, however, some disadvantages that must be observed. Water loss, for example, is an aging factor that cannot be compensated by refilling.
This overcharging is a common cause of premature battery failure. Once the plates of the battery are fully converted to their original lead dioxide (PbO2) in the positive plate and sponge lead (Pb) in the negative plate, most of the additional ampere-hours or charging current are consumed in the electrolysis of the water in the electrolyte.
