A photocell light, also known as a dusk to dawn light, is a type of lighting fixture commonly used in outdoor applications. It incorporates a light-sensitive electronic switch called a photocell, which detects the ambient light level and automatically controls the operation of the light source.
For most light-sentsitive applications like "is it light or dark out", "is there something in front of the sensor (that would block light)", "is there something interrupting a laser beam" (break-beam sensors), or "which of multiple sensors has the most light hitting it", photocells can be a good choice!
Our efficiency calculations, based on Eq. 14.28, use a very simple model that totally ignores the photocell itself which is assumed to be 100% efficient. Its results are identical to the ultimate efficiency of Shockley and Queiser (SQ).
Sensitivity, spectral response, quantum efficiency, and speed of response are among the most influential characteristics or performance metrics by which photocells are characterized and compared. The sensitivity of a photodetector is the relationship between incident light and the corresponding output signal.
But a photocell will work in all areas because it uses the daylight sensing principle. While photocell sensors detect ambient light, motion sensors detect and react to physical movement. Usually, they combine several methods to eliminate false positive motion sensing and enhance coverage. And they come in two types.
In bright light, the photocell’s resistance is around 10 kΩ, making an output of about 2.7 V. In darkness, the photocell’s resistance is around 500 kΩ, making an output of about 0.3 V. The sensor output could go to a PIC32 digital or analog input. Kevin M. Lynch, ... Matthew L. Elwin, in Embedded Computing in C with the PIC32 Microcontroller, 2016
How to Install a Photocell Sensor for Your Outdoor Lighting
To test the photocell, turn the power back on at the breaker. Make sure that the light switch is in the on position. Cover the photocell with your hand—if the light turns on when the photocell is covered, your photocell is working properly. Finish installing the photocell by putting your light fixture back together.

The optimal exposure for a photocell is an area that is shaded from direct sunlight but still receives enough natural light to function properly. If a photocell is exposed to direct sunlight, it can cause the lights to turn off during the day and turn on at night. This can be a safety hazard, especially if the lights are used for security purposes. Common Photocell …
