The primary objective of this capacitor bank is to enhance the power factor of a factory. Local regulatory standards dictate that the power factor for bulk supply connections must be maintained at 0.9 or higher.
Capacitor banks play a pivotal role in substations, serving the dual purpose of enhancing the power factor of the system and mitigating harmonics, which ultimately yields a cascade of advantages. Primarily, by improving the power factor, capacitor banks contribute to a host of operational efficiencies.
Additionally, capacitor banks function as harmonic filters, addressing and minimizing harmonic distortions in the electrical system. Their presence also contributes to enhancing the short circuit MVA, reducing voltage dips during faults and bolstering the overall resilience of the power infrastructure.
Step capacitor banks are made up of a combination of steps in parallel. A step consists of a capacitor (or a combination of capacitors) and a contactor. Switching all or part of the capacitor bank on and off is controlled by an integrated power factor controller. The capacitors will therefore only be activated after the motor starts.
Composition of LV capacitor banks A distinction is made between fixed value capacitor banks and “step” (or automatic) capacitor banks which have an adjustment system that adapts the compensation to the variations in consumption of the installation.
The capacitor bank was re-energized at the voltage peak opposite in polarity with the trapped voltage to simulate the maximum transient. Table II shows the transient voltages for different combinations. Table II. Transient peak voltages for capacitor bank re- energization Cap.
Volt/var Management: VARS – The "PRIMARY" Factor
The local capacitor bank controls are voltage-based and are set with descending time delays towards the end of the circuit. (In Figure 3, Cap#1 delay is shorter than Cap#2 delay.) The LTC transformer (located in the substation as shown in Figure 3) uses the local quantity of var flow in the circuit to determine the need for another capacitor ...
