Briefly, a battery disconnect device for an automotive vehicle includes a sense/trip circuit that sense a preselected condition of a motor vehicle battery; connecting elements such as bars connecting said battery to the vehicular equipment; and a solenoid having a coil and a contactor disposed within a closed chamber and associated with said coil.
Figure 1. Battery disconnect switch. Image used courtesy of Bodo’s Power Systems [PDF] The pre-charge circuit is needed if relays are used for charging the direct current (DC) link capacitor parallel to the inverter, which has an inrush current depending on its size, voltage, and time transients.
This article introduces high-voltage battery disconnect switches, where transistors have replaced the old-fashioned relays. Electric cars currently on the market use 400 and 800 V batteries with nominal currents above 200 amperes, which could be lethal if this high voltage and current were connected to the chassis or any conductive part of the car.
This circuit prevents over-discharge of a lead-acid battery by opening a relay contact when the voltage drops to a predetermined voltage (lower voltage threshold). When the battery is recharged to a second predetermined higher voltage (upper voltage threshold), the relay contact automatically re-closes and power again flows to the load.
When you choose to use a 6 volts battery circuit, simply shift the Zener diode to 3.1 volts. The circuit can be used with batteries of any kind, such as 12V, 9V, 6V, 5V, etc. You just need to adjust the value of the 5.1 V Zener diode according to the form of battery voltage.
When the batteries are often fully discharged, their lives will be shortened and destroyed in a few weeks. Therefore, when your battery is weak or needs recharging it is best to remove your battery from the load. So today we are going to discuss “Low Battery Voltage Cuttoff OR Disconnect Circuit”.

Circuit Breakers and Disconnects
Circuit breakers are the "final control elements" of the electric power industry, akin to control valves in the process industries. They are strictly on/off devices, used to make and break connections under load in power systems. Circuit breakers automatically open when dangerous circuit conditions are detected. Some low-voltage circuit breakers are strictly local-controlled …
