Electrolyte materials have a significant impact on the performance and longevity of supercapacitors. This review article provides an overview of the recent advancements in electrolyte materials for supercapacitor applications, including ionic liquids, solid-state electrolytes, and gel electrolytes.
Electrolytes have a major role to determine the specific capacitance of supercapacitors. Though, every electrolyte has its own pros and cons, still, we can sequence them as per their behavior under the electrode-based performance and the atmosphere in which they perform efficiently or less efficiently.
In supercapacitors, the electrolyte is a vital and fundamental component that is crucial to the transfer and harmonising of charges in between the two electrodes. In provision for electrochemical supercapacitors, electrolytes are categorized in to several categories.
Water in salt electrolytes have succeeded in having attention of the researchers due to their excellent conductivity, wider potential window and low cost. However, non-aqueous electrolytes, such as LiPF 6 and Ethylene Carbonate, are being researched to further improve the performance of supercapacitors.
Role of size of electrolyte ions Electrolytes are perceived as one of the most substantial ingredients in electrochemical supercapacitors (ESs). Considering the wide operational voltage, the most commercially available ESs use an organic electrolyte.
So, for high-temperature uses, ionic liquid electrolytes act as an alternate for the working of supercapacitor. The stability of electrolytes can be determined by Simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) studies, etc. .
