In 1839, the ability of some materials to create an electrical charge from light exposure was first observed by the French physicist Edmond Becquerel. Though these initial solar panels were too inefficient for even simple electric devices, they were used as an instrument to measure light.
The Commission of the European Communities actively pursued PV installations among its member states beginning in 1975 . The Directorate General (DG XII) initiated a PV pilot program with 16 systems installed across Europe from 1982 to 1984 with a total capacity of 1MWp.
The performance of a photovoltaic (PV) module depends on the environmental conditions, mainly on the global incident irradiance G in the plane of the module.
